Agrokor, Mercator sign cooperation agreement

Croatia's food concern Agrokor said on Tuesday it signed a cooperation agreement with Slovenian retail chain Mercator today, in accordance with a contract under which Agrokor is buying a 53.12 per cent stake in Mercator.

The owner of Croatia's Agrokor food concern, Ivica Todoric, said in an interview with Tuesday's issue of the Slovenian business newspaper Finance that he would not have ventured into the deal to take over Slovenia's Mercator retail chain if he was not convinced that in synergy with Agrokor he could create a good company that would work at a profit. He refuted fears by Slovenian suppliers that he would replace Slovenian products with Croatian ones.

Slovenian PM says Mercator sold by former cabinet, not hers

Slovenian Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek said on Monday she was confident the consortium of owners of a 53 per cent stake in Slovenia's largest retail chain, Mercator, had protected the interests of Slovenian suppliers and jobs during negotiations with Croatia's Agrokor, adding that Mercator was not being sold by her government but that it had been sold by the Janez Jansa Cabinet in 2005.

Croatian President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic held a joint press conference on Monday following a scandal involving printouts of telephone calls, saying that the police had not violated the law in the course of their duties. I completely believe Minister Ranko Ostojic but it is obvious that supervision of police-intelligence systems is not well placed, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy Radimir Cacic said responding to questions by journalists about his opinion of the Interior Minister's claims that there had been no unlawful phone-tapping.
