Dioki workers protest in St. Mark's Square

About a hundred workers of the Dioki petrochemical company on Thursday morning started a protest in St Mark's Square in Zagreb which houses the government and parliament, asking to be received by somebody from the Zoran Milanovic cabinet who would offer a solution for the payment of their claims, as they have not received salaries for the past six months.

About 300 workers of Dioki and Dina Petrokemija from the privately-owned petrochemical group Dioki who rallied in Zagreb on Wednesday demanding payment of their overdue wages and severance packages, dispersed after their representatives and Economy Ministry agreed that a meeting of all interested parties would be called within 24 hours in an attempt to find a solution for a difficult social situation of Dioki and Dina workers.

About 300 workers of the petrochemical company Dioki, who rallied in Zagreb's main square on Wednesday morning demanding unpaid wages and severance packages, headed for St Mark's Square, the seat of the government, where they expected to be received by government ministers but only managed to talk to Finance Minister Slavko Linic over the phone, after which they continued their protest by blocking one of the busiest intersections in downtown Zagreb.

Finance minister announces suits against Caliskan for pulling out of Dina

Even though some talks are currently being held with representatives of the company owned by General Ivan Cermak - Crodux Plin - and of which the government has not been officially notified, it will be difficult to salvage the Dina petrochemical plant, Finance Minister Slavko Linic said in Varazdin on Monday and announced that the Turkish Caliskan company was to blame for an agreement to salvage Dina falling through and that the government would instigate proceedings against it.

The president of the union active in the Dina petrochemical company, Predrag Mihaljevic, said on Friday all prerequisites for re-launching production were met, the company's account was unblocked and electricity supply under favourable conditions was ensured, but added that management said the Turkish investor did not intend to launch production for now, so the union recommends offering the renewal of production to another investor.

The Turkish company Caliskan paid EUR 5 million into the accounts of the Croatian petrochemical companies Dioki and Dina Petrokemija on Wednesday, which enabled the payment of overdue salaries to their workers on Thursday, the Dioki management said in a statement on the Zagreb Stock Exchange.

The petrochemical Dioki Group said on Tuesday that all contracts and agreements with the Turkish investor Caliskan had been defined and signed by the investor and that in the meantime, in accordance with a Croatian government decision, Zagrebacka Banka had issued a guarantee to the investor's commercial bank.
